The same changes that have disrupted the news industry will, inevitably, disrupt the book industry; Public Parts hints at what might come of the disruption. Books as community. Books as conversation. Books as ideas that evolve over time — ideas that shift and shape and inspire — and that, as such, have the potential of viral impact.

Books for entrepreneurs

Was re-reading a post from Fred Wilson on books for entrepreneurs and there’s a lot of inspiration to be found in there. Ordered 3 books myself as a result:

  1. The Prince - Machiavelli
  2. Sun Tzu
  3. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance- Robert Pirsiq

I just finished this Dutch novel “The House of the Mosque” by Iranian dissident Kader Abdollah. I started it 3 weeks ago on our holiday to Texel. It’s his personal story and the story of the Iranian people starting in the 70’s, just before the Sjah was replaced by the Islamic nation led by the Ayatollahs. I started reading it to learn more about the Islam. Little did I know it became a really current subject with the student protests going on in Tehran as I write this. It’s a beautiful novel which reads like a Persian story - as I would imagine it. And the last chapter is impressive, very impressive. Highly recommended.

The Surinam kitchen

Last weekend I bought a children bike seat via Marktplaats.nl, the Dutch classifieds site, to be placed in our new cargo bike for my youngest boy. I ended up in the house of the seller, Faisel Rajjab, who appears to be an illustrator and writer of the Dutch food book “The adventurous Surinam kitchen”. I love Surinam food and will definitely buy his book!
