Besides all the fun associated with being an early adapter one also bears the costs of initial product flaws. In this case, a Boxee Box internal fan that is rather LOOUUUDDD. Loud as in: I can clearly hear it spin from a distance of 7m. Check out this video of someone else experiencing the same issue. Not acceptable. This baby is going back to where it came from. BTW the other side of the coin is that the box is beautiful, comes with an awesome remote, packs an amazing UI and performs as you would expect. I will shoot an email to Boxee and keep you posted here.
UPDATE: Within 15 minutes of posting this and Tweeting it out, Boxee reached out via Twitter. Cool. Let’s see what they suggest.
UPDATE 3-12: Boxee confirmed that it might be a defunct fan and suggested I return it to BOL.com and get a replacement box. I just called BOL.com on how to proceed. They say I have to return the box, after which I will get a refund. Then I need to order a new box again. But the box has a delivery period of 3-4 weeks. I said that I expect to be helped with priority after this issue. BOL said this isn’t possible. WTF?! I have no issue with the fact that some products are lemons, as long as you find a proper way to deal with it. I filed a complaint at BOL. To be continued…
Just pre-ordered a Boxee Box at Amazon. Yes, I am going for this one instead of Apple TV or Google TV. Why? Wrote about if before but in short, it’s more open than Apple TV, Google TV is still not a reality and I love the remote which I think will make a big difference in using the service. If not for me, the rest of the family will love it. Read this article for more on the comparison of the three services.
UPDATE: Upon checkout at Amazon my order was rejected. Didn’t read the announcement from Boxee carefully enough because it states pre-order is for US clients only.
How Boxee Sees the Apple TV
Apple TV… right. They want us to pay them $99 to be able to purchase content in their store. Oh, and I can watch YouTube videos and my Flickr photos. No way. I’m going for a Boxee Box. Let me decide what content I want to see on the big screen using their open source solution. Would love it if they integrate EyeTV as well. That could possibly spare me a MacMini.

This is great news: the box and remote are going to be sold separately as well. I want the remote!

If you are like me, you are seeing links to videos in email, twitter, facebook, blogs, etc all day long. It’s time consuming to stop what you are doing to watch them. Now you can simply click on the boxee bookmarklet and watch them at home on your TV set after dinner while you are winding down from the day. It’s a killer concept. Thanks Boxee.
